How Can You Reduce Transformer Noise?

How-Can-You-Reduce-Transformer-Noise

Electrical transformers are always heard to be making humming and buzzing sounds, which can be very frustrating and disturbing. The reason for this noise is the process of magnetostriction that goes on within the transformer, in which a magnetic steel sheet changes it dimensions and shape when magnetized. Because magnetostriction is an important process of a transformer, the noise cannot be completely eliminated. But yes, if desired, it can be reduced to a certain extent.

One thing you must understand is that magnetostriction is the extension and contraction of the core laminations, which produces the noise during magnetization. Thus, the transformer noise comes from the core. So, while no transformer can work without producing any noise, the design of the transformer determines the amount of noise produced. Thus, any adjustments made in the design can increase or decrease the noise level. However, the design does not account for major changes made to the noise. Thus, if you really want to have a significant amount of noise reduction, these are the things you may have to do.

Mounting the transformer on a solid plane

Transformers are always suggested to be mounted on heavy dense surfaces like concrete walls and floors, rather than plywood surfaces or thin curtain walls, which will only accelerate the humming noise, making it intolerable. As a general rule, the mounting surfaces should be ten times heavier than the transformer to be installed.

Avoiding installing transformers in corners, corridors, and stairwells

When there is lesser space between the transformer and a nearby wall, the sound only amplifies. It works just like the echo of our voice amplifying our own sound. Thus, there should be enough empty space surrounding the transformer. This is why areas like room corners, corridors, and stairwells should be avoided if you are willing to not have a very noisy annoying environment. Also, placing a transformer near the ceiling is not a good idea.

Choosing a low traffic area for installation

Where there is high traffic, there is automatically a lot of sound around. Topping up this with a noisy transformer only makes things worse and more annoying. Thus, it is always recommended to maintain at least one low traffic area between the transformer and high traffic spaces in offices or residential buildings.

Keeping the bolts enclosures tight

All the bolts and screws in the transformer’s cover and top should be properly tightened. Any loose parts will vibrate when the transformer is on, thus making sounds. This only adds to the annoying noise made by the transformers.

Using sound dampening materials

Using sound dampening materials like oil barriers or cushion padding can help absorb the sound, which reduces the noise, and prevents it from spreading. This is a way in which sound can be absorbed, but this doesn’t mean that the noise coming from the transformer is reduced. It only brings a little relief for those living around the transformer.
