How Is Electricity Transferred Into Our Homes And Offices?

How-Is-Electricity-Transferred-Into-Our-Homes-And-Offices

Every day we use electrical switches hundreds of times a day to switch on and off lights, fans, air conditioners, heaters, microwaves, coffee makers, geysers, televisions, chargers, and many other appliances. All you have to do is just flick on the switch, and Voila! You have your appliance turned on. All these modern conveniences have made our lives so much easier. And, when our electricity is cut off, we feel like our lives have paused. So, shouldn’t you consider these little switches and the power we get into our homes and offices as small miracles? Parenthetically, have you ever thought about how these miracles take place, or how does the power generated in those huge power plants come into your home? The entire process of bringing in that huge amount of power into your home for safe usage is a very complicated one, and involves lots of careful connections and devices; one of the most important ones in the process being the highest quality power transformers in India. Let us see how electricity is sent to your home, and why transformers are said to play the most important role in the process.

First and foremost, you must understand that the wires used in power lines are not perfect conductors of electricity. In fact, there are certain imperfections in the metal that tend to resist the flow of electrical current. This means that the longer the power line, the more resistance will be met by the power flow, resulting in loss of electrical power. This is where step-up transformers come to the rescue. With these transformers, the voltage produced by the power plant generators are raised to a higher voltage, thus enabling the power o travel longer distances effectively. Because transformers have an inverse relationship between voltage and current, this increased voltage results in lowering of the current flowing through the wires, meaning reduction in power loss over the long length of the transmission line.

Since the voltage from the power plant is increased to reach the transmission lines, it needs to be again decreased before being sent to the end customers, because the appliances within a home/office cannot accept the high voltage range. For this, a step-down transformer is fitted into substations miles away from the end of the transmission line. This lowers the voltage, and in turn increases the current at the other end of the line where the end customers are waiting to use the power. Numerous strategically positioned distribution lines are planned out along the path that the power travels, so that the electricity is distributed to the end customers by weaving its way through numerous streets. However, the electricity coming from the substations, even though lowered, is of thousands of volts, which cannot be used in homes/offices. Therefore, to bring in usable and safe power into homes/offices, another step-down transformer is attached with the utility pole near the building that further lowers the voltage to manageable 120 and 240 volts that can be fed into the building.

To sum it up, the path that the power travels from the power plant generator to end customers can be portrayed as below.

Power generated in utility power plant à step-up transformer à transmission tower à high voltage transmission lines à step-down transformer in substation à utility pole with step-down transformer à end customers.

Now that you understand how important transformers are in our lives, you will want to get your hands on the best quality transformers for your applications.
