How Do Toroidal Transformers Work?

How-Do-Toroidal-Transformers-Work

Transformers are used to adjust the alternating current voltage from one level to another for efficient power supply into the required application. These equipment could be used in various applications, ranging from the smallest battery chargers to the biggest power generating stations. They are available in a variety of types, each one with unique properties and applications. Today, in this blog, we will speak about the doughnut-shaped transformer, known as toroidal transformer, which has certain unique advantages over other transformers.

What advantages do toroidal transformers have over the others?

Toroidal transformers can be up to 50% smaller in size and lighter in weight as compared to other transformers for equivalent applications. Also, due to its round shape, the magnetic fields created remain within the transformer, causing lesser interference with adjacent circuits, and also producing lesser humming sound. These qualities make toroidal transformers the ideal choice for usage in highly concentrated environments where interference can be critical. Last but not the least, these transformers can be mounted very easily and quickly.

Where are toroidal transformers used?

Toroidal transformer in India are used in a wide range of applications like security systems, automotive electronics, medical isolation equipment, industrial control equipment, telecommunication systems, LED lighting, audio-visual equipment, power distribution equipment, and renewable energy inverter systems. They are used in these applications to step up or down the voltage, or to simply isolate them from a voltage source.

How do toroidal transformers work?

As mentioned above, a toroidal transformer changes the AC voltage level from one level to another, as required by the application it is used with. The transformer’s input is connected with its primary coil that is wrapped around the doughnut-shaped ferromagnetic core at the center. The electricity passing through this coil builds positive magnetic fields that rises to its peak, and then collapses when the voltage decreases to zero. Then, when the electricity passes through it in the opposite direction, a negative magnetic field is built up that collapses again when the voltage returns to zero. These collapsing magnetic fields pass through the secondary coil of the transformer to produce the output voltage. If the ratio of primary coils to the secondary coils within the transformer is 1:2, the voltage is halved, while if the ratio is 2:1, the voltage is doubled.
