Testing A Transformer

Testing-a-Transformer

Transformers are those devices that work on the principal of electromagnetic induction to transfer electrical energy from one electrical circuit to another. But, because of this important purpose that they are used for, it is vital that these devices are tested well before usage to check for their efficiency. Some of the tests that are performed on a transformer to check for its efficiency include –

Visual inspection

If the wires within the transformer are overheated, it starts running at higher temperature, which can lead to its failure. Thus, any burn marks or bulges on the transformer should be checked for.

Schematic assessment

If everything on the transformer seems visually alright, the next step is to check if the transformer is in accordance with the schematic. Look for every label and every internal connection and determine whether everything between the schematic and actual transformer is in accordance.

Winding checkup

Next, check if the magnetic field generating initial circuit is connected to the transformer’s primary winding; and the other circuit that is regaining power from the magnetic field is connected to the transformer’s secondary winding.

Diode and capacitor connections

Another important thing to check for is that the diodes and capacitors in the transformer should be connected to the secondary of the transformer. This is because only then can the alternate current power coming from the output into the direct current power be shaped.

Voltage measurement

Once all the physical tests are done and seem perfect, we move on to the performance tests. The first test to be done is to measure the voltage. For this, the transformer circuits need to be tested using a digital multimeter to get the exact reading of the voltage.

Primary measurement

Using a digital multimeter in AC mode, the transformer’s primary can be measured. If the voltage recording is less than 80%, there could be a fault in the transformer or in the circuit that offers power to the primary. In such a case, you must separate the input circuit from the primary winding of the transformer.

These are just some of the important tests that can be done on a transformer. There are many other tests that can be done such as winding resistance test, insulation resistance test, polarity test, short circuit impedance, continuity test, magnetizing current test, magnetic balance test, dielectric test, lightning impulse tests, etc. To make all of these tests possible, you need a professional transformer manufacturer who not only manufacturers transformers, but also tests them vigilantly to check for any designing, production, or performance errors beforehand to avoid any mishaps later. Miracle Electronics is one such transformer manufacturer in India who manufactures a multitude of transformers like toroidal, medical isolation, power, audio output, audio line matching, three phase, EI, SMPS, and UI transformers. Here, you can get both standard as well as customized options, depending upon your preference and requirement. Also, every product manufactured here is RoHS and REACH compliant, so you can imagine the quality of the transformers you can get here. Yet, every product is well tested after production before being delivered to the customer.
