Solder paste application
This is the first step in the PCB assembly process. Solder paste is to be applied on to the board on those areas where soldering is required, where components need to be mounted. Typically, the areas are the component pads, to achieve which a solder screen is required. Using a solder screen, the solder paste made of small grains of solder and flux, can be applied directly onto the board. Registered in the correct position, a runner is moved across the screen, squeezing small amounts of solder paste through the holes in the screen, and onto the board. However, one important thing to consider here is that the amount of solder paste that is deposited must be controlled, to ensure that the resulting joints also have the right amount of solder.
Once the solder paste is applied, the components are ready to be mounted on top so that they stick onto the board with the help of the paste. A machine is used here, loaded with reels of components, which picks up the components from the reels and places them onto the board in the correct position. The solder paste is sticky enough to hold the components in their positions, at least for a bit, until the permanent soldering process is performed.
At this stage, the components are permanently stuck to the board by passing them through a soldering machine. With the help of this machine, the components are fixed permanently in place; thus completing the board.
Inspection and testing
Now that the board is ready, it is to be inspected and tested before being delivered to the clients. Because of the hundreds of components placed on a single board, manual inspection is not possible. Thus, an automatic optical inspection is employed here with the help of machines that can detect any poor joints, wrong components, and misplaced components. Once inspected, the boards are also tested for performance using a variety of techniques.
Packaging and delivery
This is the final stage, where the PCBs are packed and delivered to the client once everything is found to be appropriate – both in terms of appearance and performance.
